Wedding card book

23 Mar

This book contains a collection of wedding cards bound together as a keepsake. The highly-customised book is packed with special wishes from friends and family and is an original way of keeping these precious memories together.

My client had saved many memorabilia from their wedding day – from the bridesmaid dress material, wedding ribbon to the wedding invite. Each of these details provided inspiration for me and were incorporated into the design of this unique book.

The red material which I used to line the inside of the white leather was spare material saved from the bridesmaid dresses. The vivid red creates a beautiful contrast against the white leather and other hints of this red are used throughout the binding.

This wedding was a winter wedding and the motif of a snowflake was used on the invitations. I embroidered this motif on the front of the cover tying in the winter theme once again.

Boxes for photographic collections

30 Jun

Over the last few months I have been working collaboratively with an artist who wanted a set of boxes to display his photographs in. He was particularly interested in having Tibetan imagery or colours incorporated into the design as he has an ongoing relationship with this country and Buddhism.

On the spine of each box there is a strand of the Endless Knot – a common motif in Tibet. Each box combined together forms a complete Endless Knot when standing side-by-side. The number 108 is important in Tibetan Buddhism and is reflected in the design – there are 12 boxes which will have 9 photographs in each box. So every part adds up to a bigger whole!

The technical name for this box is a Solander or Clamshell Box. This style has two inner boxes (one fits into the other) and both are encased by a hardback cover. The boxes make a lovely whooshing sound when shutting.

Sunset orange wedding album

31 Jul

This album was made to match the bridesmaid dresses which were a beautiful shade of orange. I found the paper in Daintree, a local paper shop in Dublin, Ireland. They also had a green version of the coverpaper which I bought too – one for Autumn and one for Spring.

I originally had planned to use a darker bookcloth colour – brown or maroon perhaps – but the red seemed to set off the orange colours the best.

Large Leporello albums

8 May

I have recently starting making Leporello albums using huge pieces of heavy-weight Fabriano paper. These albums have no spine, folding out like an accordion.

Photos can be glued to both sides of the page and it can also be used as a photo display case, on top of a shelf or mantelpiece. For the covers, I used pages from an old 1930s logbook and a 1970s book on mapping.

Baby memory book

30 Apr

I have designed a new Baby Memory Book that serves as a record of all the milestones and memories of a baby’s first years. This special memory book has a blank page for photos on the left side and a personalised printed page on the right-hand side to be filled in with memories.

This 60-page memory book has pages covering everything from the family tree to first milestones, from the pregnancy to Mammy’s and Daddy’s first date. The baby’s name is inscribed on the front cover and appears on many of the pages making it a very unique gift.

Plum Vine Wedding Album Set

14 Feb

Here is a set of wedding albums which I made a few days ago. The bride sent me a swatch of cloth from the bridesmaid dress so that I could colour match the albums. The swatch was a plumy pinky red so I chose a paper that had a mix of this colour in it. The rich ribbon colour brought all the albums together, creating a luxurious feel to them.

I made 2 Japanese Stab stitch albums using a decorative Crossed stitch and 1 medium-sized Case-bound album. Each of the books has an inscription inside with the bride and groom’s name, wedding date and venue.

Memory book

27 Jan

This is a book I made as a 30th birthday present for my friend Clare. A call was put out amongst her friends for any old photos, memorabilia or stories about her. There was a great response and soon I had a wonderful collection of stories, old postcards, photos, ticket stubs, school yearbook clippings and lots more.

I bound the book using a Coptic stitch and used extra boards parallel to the spine to compensate for the thickness of the photos and other things being stuck in on the pages.

For the collage cover, I used a mixture of colours that I associate with Clare, contrasted with red faux leather. I typed her name using an old typewriter, giving it a nostalgic feel.
