Black and white wedding

21 Nov

The colour theme of this wedding was black and white. I found out that the bride’s favourite colour is green so we decided to add green accents to the wedding album set. On each end of the large album’s spine, I hand-stitched headbands using green and black thread. The green thread matched the ribbon perfectly and added another touch of colour to the album.

The smaller album is a variation of a Japanese stitch. I used a wide green ribbon which gives a luxurious feel to the album.

Retirement album

8 Dec

Here’s an album I made as a retirement present. I was given a selection of photos that I could use for the cover – the only instructions were to do something a little different than just putting a plain photo on the cover.

I photographed the photos on a wooden background – something that added a little bit of texture but wasn’t too distracting at the same time.

This album is an accordion album which means that it has no spine and is made using a series of folds. This album can be displayed standing on a mantelpiece or used as a traditional album.

Baby birthday card book

1 Nov

This book contains a collection of a baby’s birthday cards. A lot of the time, these cards remain in a box or bottom of a drawer, some inevitably getting lost along the way.

I bound these cards together using a medieval style of limp leather binding. This style of binding has been used since the 14th century and was particularly popular with members of the clergy and travelling journeymen.

I have strengthened each card along its spine to ensure the stability of the book. The end paper – lining the leather and making up the first and last page – is a thick handmade paper from Nepal. It has a beautiful velvety texture with real leaves forming part of the paper.

Nostalgic accordion album

27 Sep

I made this album as a present for my parents-in-law. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and had a party to celebrate. My partner was taking the photographs for the day, so I thought it would be nice if I made an album for the photos.

The image on the cover is a photograph I took of their old wedding album which they had on display. I printed the image using sepia and grainy effects. Then I drew onto the image with silver pen and reprinted it. This process gave it a vintage look that suits a 50th wedding anniversary!

Complete wedding album

22 Jun

This wedding album was given as a birthday present. The couple had never gotten around to printing their wedding photos so the bride asked me to bind, print and complete their wedding album as a gift for her husband. There was a lot of discussion about the cover paper: she wanted a blue and gold cover, but knew that he would prefer a simpler black and white one! Eventually we found a compromise – a black and white cover with a bright blue ribbon.

After finishing the binding, I then started sorting through all the photos, selecting and resizing the best photos. By the end of the album, I felt like I had been at the wedding!

Baby memory book

30 Apr

I have designed a new Baby Memory Book that serves as a record of all the milestones and memories of a baby’s first years. This special memory book has a blank page for photos on the left side and a personalised printed page on the right-hand side to be filled in with memories.

This 60-page memory book has pages covering everything from the family tree to first milestones, from the pregnancy to Mammy’s and Daddy’s first date. The baby’s name is inscribed on the front cover and appears on many of the pages making it a very unique gift.

Plum Vine Wedding Album Set

14 Feb

Here is a set of wedding albums which I made a few days ago. The bride sent me a swatch of cloth from the bridesmaid dress so that I could colour match the albums. The swatch was a plumy pinky red so I chose a paper that had a mix of this colour in it. The rich ribbon colour brought all the albums together, creating a luxurious feel to them.

I made 2 Japanese Stab stitch albums using a decorative Crossed stitch and 1 medium-sized┬áCase-bound album. Each of the books has an inscription inside with the bride and groom’s name, wedding date and venue.

Art Deco wedding album set

19 Aug

I was asked to make this wedding set (guest book and 2 albums) for a couple who like a minimalistic style. When I heard that their wedding colours were black and white, I instantly thought of using this paper.

The guest book is a Secret Belgian binding – my new favourite! I thought that this style would really compliment the paper pattern. I have included some photos of this book in progress, to give you an idea of how it is made.

The large album is a Japanese Stab stitch album. It also has an inscription on the front page ‘I am convinced that to live is to travel to the world’s end’. This quote was chosen because the couple meet while working in a bar called ‘World’s End’. The smaller album is a traditional case bound book. I used the black book cloth in a way that mimics the paper pattern. Each of the albums have black paper inside, making a nice contrast with the coverpaper.
