Birthday card book

16 Jan

I was recently given a stack of cards that had been diligently collected by a mother spanning her daughter’s whole life. They included baby cards, confirmation booklets, birthday cards to her wedding day cards – a beautiful collection and record of the past. Lots of the cards containing personal messages were from people who have since past away.

The daughter asked me would it be possible to bind them altogether in some way. I love a challenge and this sounded like a lovely way to gather the cards together.

Since the cards were all different shapes and sizes, I had to think carefully about the binding, ensuring that it would not be weak in any part. I strengthened up several of the cards using Japanese paper along the folds. I also distributed the various shaped cards evenly throughout the book in order to minimize the chance of weak areas. The cards were bound individually to each other and I also used lashings of binder’s glue to stabilise the book.
